About this stamp

On the Stamp

Gandhi in South Africa beside a page of his newspaper Indian Opinion of 1 September 1906, on the Transvaal’s Asiatic Draft Ordinance, with a settlement in the background.

A Hundred Years of Satyagraha

India Post issued four ₹5 stamps and a ₹20 miniature sheet on 2 October 2007, Gandhi’s birthday, for a hundred years of satyagraha, the “truth force” of non-violent resistance that Mahatma Gandhi developed in his struggle for Indian rights in South Africa and later used in the Indian independence movement. It went on to influence Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. The stamps run from Gandhi’s years in South Africa to the Dandi March of 1930. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamps themselves.
