About this stamp

A Hundred Years of the Mahasamadhi

India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 15 December 2017 for the centenary of the Mahasamadhi of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba, who died at Shirdi on 15 October 1918, the day of Vijayadashami. He was first seen at Shirdi as a youth in the second half of the nineteenth century. He spoke Urdu, Hindi, Marathi and some southern languages, and joined in both Hindu and Muslim festivals: a Sadguru to Hindus and a fakir to Muslims, universal and humanitarian in his approach.

Shirdi

By his death the small village of Shirdi in Maharashtra had become a place of pilgrimage, visited by devotees of every faith and by figures such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak. He made no distinction between his devotees, taught by his actions rather than by preaching, and stood for compassion, love and tolerance; his word settled the village’s affairs, from building houses to quarrels. Temples and organisations in India and abroad marked the centenary from October 2017 to October 2018.

The stamp was designed by Alka Sharma; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 600,700.
