The Mahabharat in Indian Art
India Post issued eighteen stamps on the Mahabharat on 27 November 2017, in a ₹430 sheetlet holding all eighteen, with the ₹50 and ₹100 stamps also in miniature sheets of their own. The stamps show how the epic has been told in the art of different parts of India: a Rajasthani pichwai, a painting by Raja Ravi Varma, a leather shadow puppet, a patachitra scroll, Mughal miniatures from Persian translations, illustrated manuscripts, stone reliefs at Halebidu and Mahabalipuram, Kalamkari, and five pictures from the 1,200-metre scroll of the Adi Parva painted by Santok Ba, a folk artist of central India, now kept at the IGNCA in Delhi. They were designed by Bharti Mirchandani from inputs by Lakshmikanta Dash, Meena Mani and Santok Ba; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 5 lakh of the sheetlet and of each miniature sheet.
