About this stamp

On the Stamp

Three Indian soldiers in the blue berets of the United Nations, with a dove carrying an olive branch over the globe, and the words “Indian Soldiers of Peace”.

The Indian Army in UN Peacekeeping

India Post issued this ₹5 stamp, in a miniature sheet, on 24 October 2004. United Nations peacekeeping sends military, police and civilian personnel under UN command to help countries move from conflict to peace. As the sheet records, the Indian Army had by then served in 38 UN missions over 55 years since 1950, with 70,000 troops, and 109 soldiers had given their lives. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamp and its sheet.
