Women Empowerment
India Post issued four ₹5 stamps and a ₹20 miniature sheet on Women Empowerment on 2 September 2015. The brochure recalls that equality for women is written into the Constitution, in its Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Duties and Directive Principles, which also allow the State to favour women; that the National Commission for Women was set up in 1990; and that the 73rd and 74th Amendments of 1993 reserved seats for women in panchayats and municipalities. Yet a wide gap remains between these goals and the lives of many women, seen in a declining sex ratio, violence and discrimination, and unequal access to education, health and property. Equal education, health care from girlhood on, a share in decision-making and campaigns such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao are needed to close it. The stamps were designed by Suresh Kumar; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 0.5 million of each and 0.2 million sheets.
