The Majestic Mountain Lake of Ladakh
Tsomo Riri, often referred to as the “Mountain Lake,” is one of the most spectacular high-altitude lakes in the Himalayas. Located in the remote Rupshu Valley of Ladakh, the lake lies about 240 km from Leh and sits at an altitude of approximately 4,267 meters above sea level.
Stretching nearly 15 miles in length and 3–4 miles in width, Tso Moriri is a vast and enchanting expanse of crystal-clear water surrounded by towering mountains. Near the lake lies the small village of Korzok, home to nomadic communities who have lived in harmony with the harsh yet beautiful landscape for generations.
The lake and its surrounding wetlands are an important habitat for rare and migratory birds. The region also supports diverse wildlife, including the Kiang, Red Fox, and the elusive Snow Leopard. Because of its unique ecosystem and breathtaking scenery, Tso Moriri is considered one of the most ecologically significant lakes in the high Himalayas.
Philatelic Tribute
Recognizing the natural beauty and environmental importance of such lakes, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp celebrating the Himalayan Lakes of India, with Tso Moriri featured as one of these remarkable natural treasures.
