The Mystery Lake of the Himalayas
Roop kund Lake is a fascinating high-altitude lake located in the Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Situated at an altitude of about 5,029 meters above sea level, the lake lies beneath the imposing Trisul massif and is surrounded by rugged glaciers and snow-covered peaks.
Roopkund is popularly known as the “Mystery Lake” because numerous human skeletons and horse remains were discovered around its shores. These skeletal remains, visible when the ice melts, have intrigued historians, scientists, and trekkers for decades, giving the lake its mysterious reputation.
The lake itself is small but strikingly beautiful, set amid a dramatic landscape of rocky glaciers and towering Himalayan peaks. Despite its remote and challenging location, Roopkund has become an important destination for trekkers and explorers seeking to experience the unique natural and historical intrigue of the region.
Philatelic Tribute
Recognizing the beauty and significance of such remarkable high-altitude lakes, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp celebrating the Himalayan Lakes of India, with Roopkund featured as one of these extraordinary natural wonders.
