About this stamp
Kavi Muddana
Kavi Muddana (1870–1901), whose real name was Nandalike Lakshminarayana, is counted a harbinger of the renaissance in Kannada literature. A drill master by profession, he published his great works as if they were old manuscripts by an earlier poet called Muddana, fearing that publishers would turn down the work of a drill master; only after his death did the Kannada world learn who Muddana was and honour him.
His Works
His works include the prose epic Shri Ramashwamedham and Shri Rama Pattabhishekam, and his Yakshagana poetry is held unrivalled in coastal Karnataka. He also edited and composed traditional songs, and was writing a novel and compiling an encyclopedia when he died of tuberculosis in 1901; his relatives, blaming his studies for his death, burned his unpublished manuscripts.
India Post issued three ₹5 stamps on 1 November 2017 for Kavi Muddana, Adikavi Nannaya and the Draksharamam Bhimeswara Temple. They were designed by Kamleshwar Singh and printed by Security Printing Press, Hyderabad: 550,000 of the Muddana stamp and 500,000 of each of the other two.
