About this stamp

The Poet of Mithila

Vidyapati (c. 1352–1448), the great poet of Mithila, wrote in Maithili and Sanskrit. A legend says that Shiva, moved by his devotion and his poetry, came to serve him in the guise of a cowherd called Ugna. His devotional songs are still sung in Mithila and shaped the literatures of Bengal, Odisha and Assam.

India Post issued eight ₹5 stamps on 26 December 2016 in a Personality Series: Bihar, designed by Nenu Gupta and Alka Sharma and printed by Security Printing Press, Hyderabad, 2 lakh of each. The brochure’s scan is partly illegible, so these texts also draw on Wikipedia.
