About this stamp

Gurajada Apparao

India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 21 September 2013, his birthday, for Gurajada Venkata Apparao (1862–1915), playwright, poet and pioneer of modern Telugu literature. His play Kanyasulkam (1892), on the sale of young brides, is considered the greatest play in Telugu, and his song “Desamunu Preminchumanna” (1910) is still sung. He holds the titles Kavisekhara and Abhyudaya Kavitha Pithamahudu.
