About this stamp

On the Stamp

A Nilgiri tahr standing on a rock, printed in brown, with “Nilgiri Tahr” in Hindi and English, on a 50 paise definitive.

Nilgiri Tahr

India Post issued this 50 paise definitive on 20 July 2000; Colnect records it as printed by photogravure at the Security Printing Press, Nashik, on paper watermarked with the Asokan Capital. The Nilgiri tahr is a hoofed mammal found only in the Nilgiri Hills and the southern Western Ghats, in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is endangered, and it is the state animal of Tamil Nadu. No India Post brochure for this stamp is online, so this text draws on Wikipedia, Colnect and the stamp itself.
