A Century of Plantation Crops Research
The ICAR–Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) at Kasaragod, Kerala, began as the Coconut Research Station set up by the Madras Presidency in 1916. The Indian Central Coconut Committee took it over in 1948, and in 1970 it was merged with other coconut and arecanut stations into CPCRI, one of the institutes of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Its work on coconut, arecanut and cocoa is carried out at Kasaragod and at centres including Kayamkulam, Vittal, Kidu, Mohitnagar, Kahikuchi and Minicoy, and it leads the All India Coordinated Research Project on Palms. ICAR gave it the Sardar Patel Outstanding Institution Award.
India Post marked the institute’s hundred years on 8 January 2018 with stamps of ₹5 and ₹15 and a ₹20 miniature sheet, designed by Suresh Kumar and printed by Security Printing Press, Hyderabad.
