About this stamp

On the Stamp

Two famous Indian stamps side by side: the four annas stamp of 1854 with the Queen’s head inverted, and the 1½ annas Jai Hind stamp of 1947 with the Ashoka pillar.

Philately Day 2012

India Post issued a ₹20 stamp, singly and in a miniature sheet, for Philately Day, 12 October 2012. The stamp shows two famous Indian stamps: the four annas stamp of 1854 with Queen Victoria’s head inverted, and the 1½ annas Jai Hind stamp of 15 August 1947, the first stamp of independent India. The sheet’s margin adds an early aeroplane and an airmail label, a mail runner, and the 150-year mark of India Post. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamps themselves.
