About this stamp
A Young Revolutionary from Sitamarhi
Ramphal Mandal was born on 6 August 1924 in the village of Madhurapur, in present-day Sitamarhi district of Bihar, to Gokhul Mandal and Garbi Devi. Born into a poor farming family, he grew into a courageous freedom fighter.
The Quit India Movement
After Mahatma Gandhi gave the call of “Do or Die” on 8 August 1942, the Quit India Movement spread to Sitamarhi. Moved by the firing on peaceful protesters, Ramphal Mandal led thousands of people to Bajpatti Chowk on 24 August 1942 to challenge British rule. In the confrontation that followed, the Sub-Divisional Officer of Sitamarhi and several police personnel were killed, and Ramphal Mandal went underground.
Sacrifice
He was arrested on 1 September 1942 and tried at Bhagalpur, where he was sentenced to death. He refused to retract his confession and was executed on 23 August 1943, at the age of 19 years and 17 days. His courage inspired many young Indians to join the freedom movement. The Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp in his honour on 23 August 2026.
