About this stamp

A Beautiful Cowrie Shell from Andaman & Nicobar

Cypraea staphylaea is one of the most striking and delicate sea shells featured in the commemorative stamp series on the marine biodiversity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This species belongs to the cowrie family, known for its smooth texture, glossy finish, and intricate patterns.

Distribution and Habitat

Cypraea staphylaea is widely found across the Indo-West Pacific region, extending from North Australia to Japan and as far as Samoa. It thrives in warm, shallow marine environments, often inhabiting coral reefs and rocky coastal areas.

Physical Characteristics

Despite its small size—typically growing up to 25 mm—this shell displays remarkable detail and beauty:

  • The surface (dorsum) is covered with fine nodules in fully mature shells
  • When alive, the shell appears dark in colour but gradually fades to grey or almost white after collection
  • A key identifying feature is its well-defined teeth that extend across both margins
  • The ends of the shell are distinctly marked with red-brown coloration

These features make it easily distinguishable among other cowrie shells.

Ecological Importance

Like other molluscs, Cypraea staphylaea plays an important role in maintaining marine ecosystem balance. Molluscs are highly sensitive to environmental changes, making them valuable indicators of ocean health.

Their presence in the clean and undisturbed waters of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands highlights the ecological richness and purity of the region.

Representation in Commemorative Stamp

To promote awareness about marine biodiversity, the Department of Posts featured Cypraea staphylaea in a special stamp series dedicated to sea shells.

The stamp:

  • Showcases the shell’s intricate design and natural beauty
  • Highlights the importance of conserving marine life
  • Encourages public interest in ocean ecology

A Symbol of Marine Elegance

Cypraea staphylaea is not just a shell but a symbol of the delicate beauty and diversity of ocean life. Its inclusion in the commemorative stamp series serves as a reminder of the need to protect marine ecosystems and preserve these natural treasures for future generations.
