The First Asian Regional Red Cross Conference, hosted by the Indian Red Cross in cooperation with the League of Red Cross Societies, is set to take place in New Delhi from March 9 to 16, 1977. This conference serves as a significant gathering where all National Red Cross Societies in Asia will come together to assess their plans and programs aimed at addressing the region’s growing needs. It marks a pivotal moment in the history of the Red Cross Movement in the region.
The conference holds historic significance for India and the Indian Red Cross. Given the importance of the event, National Red Cross Societies from other continents involved in the Red Cross, as well as international organizations including some specialized agencies of the United Nations, will also be represented. Around 200 delegates and observers are expected to participate.
The conference will feature two seminars: one on “Pre-Disaster Preparedness” and the other on “Development.” The former will explore progress made in establishing Red Cross programs to prepare for disasters and discuss opportunities for enhancing regional cooperation in this area. The “Development” seminar will assess existing Red Cross community services, identify priority areas of need, particularly in rural areas, and discuss ways to further strengthen the structure and organization of the Red Cross in the region.
The recommendations arising from these seminars will be deliberated upon during plenary sessions of the conference, with the aim of formulating practical steps towards achieving the identified goals.
In recognition of the importance of this occasion, the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department is honored to issue a postage stamp to commemorate the First Asian Regional Red Cross Conference.
