Bhagalpuri Zardalu Mango – Bihar’s Golden Delight
The Bhagalpuri Zardalu Mango is a prized fruit variety from Bhagalpur and its surrounding districts, cherished for its creamy yellow pulp, enchanting aroma, and irresistible sweetness. Awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag No. 551, this mango has become a hallmark of Bihar’s horticultural excellence.
Medium-sized, weighing 186–265 grams, Zardalu mangoes are distinct for their smooth, thin peel and low-fiber, melt-in-mouth texture. With a natural sweetness ranging from 22.08–22.67° Brix, the variety is celebrated not only for its rich taste but also for its long shelf life, heavy yields, and moderate resistance to pests.
The fertile alluvial soil and sub-humid climate of Bhagalpur provide the perfect conditions for cultivating this mango, giving it its unique appearance and superior flavor. Its exceptional qualities have made Zardalu a prominent export fruit, carrying the fragrance and taste of Bihar to global markets.
To honor this heritage, the Department of Posts proudly issues a commemorative postage stamp on GI products of Bihar, highlighting the cultural and agricultural significance of the Bhagalpuri Zardalu Mango.
