About this stamp

On the Stamp

The General Post Office, Kolkata, with a red pillar box, the first stamp of independent India with the national flag, and Kolkata and Madras postmarks.

150 Years of India Post

India Post issued four ₹5 stamps, printed together, and a ₹20 miniature sheet on 4 October 2004 for 150 years of the Indian postal service, 1854 to 2004, the years printed on the sheet. India Post, the Department of Posts, is today the most widely spread postal system in the world, and India has more post offices than any other country. The four stamps run from the first stamps and mail coaches of 1854 to e-post and Speed Post. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamps themselves.
