About this stamp

On the Stamp

The ₹150 stamp shows a portrait of the young Sri Aurobindo, with the words “150th Birth Anniversary 1872–2022” in Hindi and English. It sits on a souvenir sheet drawn with a pencil sketch of Sri Aurobindo in his later years, seated.

About Sri Aurobindo

Born in Calcutta on 15 August 1872 and educated in England, Sri Aurobindo became one of the leaders of the nationalist movement, and the first political leader in India to openly call for complete independence, in his newspaper Bande Mataram. In 1910 he withdrew from politics and went to Pondicherry, where he developed the practice he called Integral Yoga and, in 1926, founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram with the Mother. He died on 5 December 1950. His life and work are told in full on the sheet’s page.
