Valour and Sacrifice – 1965 War

India Post issued three ₹5 stamps on 15 September 2015, on the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, for the fiftieth anniversary of the war of 1965 with Pakistan. In August and September 1965 Pakistan, after attacking in Kutch, sent infiltrators into the Kashmir valley in Operation Gibraltar and then launched an armoured thrust in the Chhamb sector, Operation Grand Slam, to cut the Jammu–Srinagar highway. The Indian forces, lightly equipped, stopped the offensives in both the west and the east. The war saw the capture of Hajipir, the stand at Chhamb–Jaurian, the operations on the Ichhogil Canal and the advance towards Lahore; on 10 September Pakistan’s 1st Armoured Division was broken at the Battle of Asal Uttar in the Khemkaran sector, among the fiercest tank battles since the Second World War.

The Air Force answered every call for support against a more modern Pakistani air force, and the Navy patrolled the coasts and islands, its Alizé and Sea Hawk aircraft flying surveillance from 10 to 23 September. The war brought 16 battle honours and three theatre honours, and two Param Vir Chakras, both posthumous, to CQMH Abdul Hamid and Lt Col A. B. Tarapore. The stamps were designed by Nenu Gupta; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 0.6 million of each, 0.1 million of each for the proponent.
