About this stamp

On the Stamp

Two small painted images of the Buddha beside a richly carved and painted panel.

2550 Years of the Mahaparinirvana of the Buddha

India Post issued six ₹5 stamps in a ₹30 miniature sheet on 2 May 2007 for 2550 years of the Mahaparinirvana of the Buddha. In Buddhism, parinirvana is the state entered at death by one who has attained nirvana in life, a release from the cycle of rebirth; in Buddhist art it is shown by the reclining Buddha. The six stamps show images of the Buddha and Buddhist symbols from different traditions. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamps themselves.
