About this stamp

A Sanskrit Scholar from the Himalayas

Acharya Dinesh Chandra Joshi (1926–2018) was a Sanskrit scholar and spiritual teacher from Uttarakhand who spent his life promoting Sanskrit, Vedanta and India’s cultural traditions.

Early Life and Learning

Birth and family

He was born on 11 April 1926 in the Himalayan village of Matela, Nainital, Uttarakhand, to the Vedic scholar Acharya Premballabh Joshi and Smt. Revati Joshi.

Education

His early education was a “living university” at home, under his father and grandfather. Through a lifetime of study he mastered the Shukla Yajurveda and Advaita Vedanta, learning at the Sapta Puris, India’s seven sacred centres of learning.

Work and Teaching

Sanskrit and public life

Acharya Ji saw Sanskrit as a bridge between India’s civilisational consciousness (chiti) and ethical statecraft (niti). For decades he travelled barefoot across India and Nepal, spreading the teachings of Adi Shankaracharya.

Environment and the mountains

His work also embraced environmental protection and the sanctity of mountain landscapes.

Milestones

  • 1990s: founded the Bhagavati Temple and Meditation Centre at Matela, still a place of pilgrimage.
  • 2010: his long advocacy bore fruit when Sanskrit was declared the second official language of Uttarakhand.
  • Sanskrit Day, 2010: founded SWASTIVACHANAM, built around five fields he called the Pancha Mahaprasthanas: Sanskrit journalism, Ayurveda, Yoga, Vastu Shastra and Indology.

Legacy

Known as “Acharya Ji” or “Pandit Ji”, he was remembered as a bridge between vidya (knowledge) and seva (service). Several Sahitya Akademi award-winning poets wrote about him. He passed away on 18 March 2018, during Chaitra Navaratri.

The Commemorative Stamp

India Post issued a stamp in his honour on 15 May 2026, the year of his birth centenary.
