About this stamp
On the Stamp
The head of a maned lion, with a second lion walking behind, on the ₹15 stamp.
Asiatic Lion
India Post issued four stamps on the Asiatic lion on 4 October 1999, three at ₹3 and one at ₹15, each with the emblem of the WWF and the name Panthera leo persica in Hindi and Latin. The Asiatic lion now survives in the wild only in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, is included on CITES Appendix I and is legally protected in India; Wikipedia now places it in the subspecies Panthera leo leo. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamp itself.
