Banaras Hindu University

India Post issued two stamps, ₹5 and ₹15, printed together as a pair, on 28 June 2017 on Banaras Hindu University. Founded in 1916 by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, with the support of nationalists such as Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Surendranath Banerjee, it was the first truly residential Indian university, on the pattern of ancient Nalanda and Taxila, and is the largest residential university in Asia. It brought together oriental and theological learning with the liberal arts, science, engineering, Ayurveda and modern medicine and agriculture, and was open from the start to people of every class, caste, creed and sex.

Within its walls are 16 faculties, 134 teaching departments, five institutes, a constituent college and the Bharat Kala Bhawan museum. Its alumni have included a Vice-President, Prime Ministers, a Chief Justice of India and Bharat Ratna awardees, and builders of India’s industries and institutions after independence.
