About this stamp

C. V. Raman Pillai

India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 19 May 2010, the anniversary of the birth of C. V. Raman Pillai (1858–1922), the pioneering Malayalam novelist and playwright. He is known for his historical novels Marthandavarma, Dharmaraja and Ramaraja Bahadur, the last considered one of the greatest novels written in Malayalam.

Born in Thiruvananthapuram, capital of the princely state of Travancore, he studied at His Highness Maharaja’s College there and took his BA from Madras University in 1881. He worked as a clerk at the High Court and retired as superintendent of the Government Press. Along the way he started a periodical, The Kerala Patriot, and founded three more: Malayali in 1886, Vanchiraj in 1901 and Mitabhashi in 1920.

The stamp shows his portrait, with his name in English and Hindi.

India Post has no brochure for this issue online, so this text draws on Wikipedia.
