A Hundred Years of Champaran
India Post issued three stamps, of ₹5, ₹10 and ₹25, and a ₹40 miniature sheet on 13 May 2017 for the centenary of the Champaran Satyagraha, Gandhi’s first satyagraha in India. At the Lucknow Congress of 1916 Raj Kumar Shukla asked him to see the plight of Champaran’s indigo farmers for himself, and on 15 April 1917 Gandhi arrived at Motihari. Ordered to leave the district, he refused, telling the court he would make Champaran his home until he had helped the people; his inquiry into the farmers’ conditions led to the end of forced indigo cultivation. The stamps were designed by Sankha Samanta; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 5 lakh of each and 1 lakh sheets.
