About this stamp
On the Stamp
The stamp pairs a bird from each country. On the left is the Indian peacock, India’s national bird, with its blue neck, crest and long train. On the right, perched on a branch, is the Mauritius kestrel, a small falcon found only in the forests of Mauritius.
The Mauritius Kestrel
The Mauritius kestrel (Falco punctatus) lives in the forests, cliffs and ravines of the island’s south-western plateau. By 1974 it was close to extinction, with only five or six birds known. Years of conservation work brought it back, to about 400 birds by 2019.
The Issue
India Post issued this ₹25 stamp in a souvenir sheet on 2 November 2023, for 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Mauritius, which were established in 1948. The date is Aapravasi Diwas, when Mauritius remembers the arrival of the first indentured workers from India on 2 November 1834. The stamp was designed by Anuj Kumar and printed by wet offset at the Security Printing Press, Hyderabad; 111,000 sheets were printed.
