About this stamp

On the Stamp

Jagjit Singh

India Post issued a se-tenant pair of stamps, ₹5 and ₹20, on 8 February 2014, the birthday of the ghazal singer and composer Jagjit Singh (1941–2011). Born Jagmohan Singh Dhiman at Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan, he trained in Hindustani classical music and is credited with reviving the ghazal for a wide audience, choosing poetry that spoke to people and setting it to melodies that brought out its words. His music for the films Arth and Saath Saath and the television serial Mirza Ghalib, and his 1987 album Beyond Time, India’s first digitally recorded release, made him one of the most successful ghazal singers of all time. India Post’s brochure online has only the technical data and the first day cover, so this text draws on Wikipedia. Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 0.41 million of each stamp.
