About this stamp

On the Stamp

The bronze statue of Krishnadevaraya with his hands folded, before carved reliefs and a stone chariot, on the ₹5 stamp.

Krishnadevaraya

India Post issued a ₹5 stamp, singly and in a miniature sheet, on 27 January 2011 on Krishnadevaraya (1471–1529), emperor of Vijayanagara from 1509 to 1529 and the third ruler of the Tuluva dynasty. He ruled the largest and most powerful empire in India of his time, defeating the sultans of Bijapur and Golconda, the Bahmani Sultanate and the Gajapatis of Odisha. The Portuguese travellers Domingo Paes and Duarte Barbosa, who visited his court, described him as an able administrator and an exceptional military commander. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamps themselves.
