About this stamp

On the Sheetlet

A ₹45 sheetlet of nine ₹5 stamps of Kumar Gandharva, the Hindustani singer known for his innovations, from nirguni bhajans and the folk music of Madhya Pradesh to new ragas, with a portrait of the musician in the margin. 0.1 million were printed.

Indian Musicians

India Post issued eight stamps on 3 September 2014 in tribute to legendary maestros of Indian classical music, in both its traditions: Hindustani music of the north, with its khayal and dhrupad forms and its gharanas, and the more rhythmically structured Carnatic music of the south. The six ₹5 stamps honour D. K. Pattammal, Gangubai Hangal, Kumar Gandharva, Vilayat Khan, Mallikarjun Mansur and Ali Akbar Khan, and the two ₹25 stamps Ravi Shankar and Bhimsen Joshi. They were issued in an ₹80 miniature sheet and in eight sheetlets of nine, one for each musician. The stamps and sheet were designed by Sankha Samanta and the sheetlets by Nenu Gupta; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 0.5 million of each ₹5 stamp, 0.8 million of each ₹25 stamp, 0.4 million sheets and 0.1 million of each sheetlet.
