Ladybird Beetles

India Post issued four stamps on ladybird beetles on 23 February 2017: two of ₹5 and two of ₹15, in a ₹40 miniature sheet and in four sheetlets of sixteen. Ladybirds, the beetle family Coccinellidae, take their name from “Our Lady’s bird”; most are small, dome-shaped and yellow, orange or red with black spots, colours that warn predators of their bitter taste. Nearly all of them, as larvae and adults, prey on aphids and scale insects, so farmers and gardeners value them as natural pest control; a female may lay up to 1,000 eggs in a summer.

The stamps, sheet and sheetlets were designed by Suresh Kumar; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 1 lakh miniature sheets and 20,000 of each of the four sheetlets.
