About this stamp
On the Stamp
Gandhi as a young lawyer in South Africa, in a suit and high collar, with a column of marchers behind him. The saying reads “हिंसा दुर्बल का शस्त्र है, अहिंसा सबल का”: violence is the weapon of the weak, non-violence that of the strong.
The brochure recalls the insults that shaped him: being turned out of the office of Sir Charles Ollivant, the Political Agent in Kathiawar; being asked to remove his turban in a Durban court; and the journey from Durban to Pretoria. After reading a book by Tolstoy he resolved the conflict in his mind against violence, and these experiences led to Satyagraha, which he used first in South Africa and then in India.
