About this stamp
On the Stamp
Gandhi wrapped in a shawl, deep in thought on the seashore under a full moon. The saying reads “सत्य ही ईश्वर है”: Truth is God.
As a boy of twelve Gandhi was moved by a play on Harishchandra, who held to the truth whatever it cost him. Later he wrote that of all the names of God he would choose Sat or Satya, Truth, and so Truth is God. His campaigns of civil disobedience were always announced in advance, and his newspapers printed his critics’ comments alongside his own.
