About this stamp
On the Stamp
An elderly, smiling Gandhi in his round spectacles against an orange sky, with a small figure at work behind him. The saying reads “स्वच्छता जब भीतरी और बाहरी रहती है तब वह ईश्वरमयता को पहुँचाती है”: when there is both inner and outer cleanliness, it approaches godliness.
Gandhi held cleanliness to be essential for physical and mental well-being and for a healthy environment. He lamented that people kept clean personal habits but did not care about public hygiene, and believed that the nation could not develop without clean and healthy surroundings.
