About this stamp
On the Stamp
Gandhi bending over a sick, elderly man lying on a mat, with a figure at a microscope behind them. The saying reads “जो जीवन सेवा में व्यतीत होता है वही फलदायी है”: a life spent in service is the only fruitful life.
The compassion that Gandhi showed from boyhood, the brochure says, is why he could dress the wounds of an indentured labourer suffering from leprosy as easily as he inspected latrines in plague-hit Bombay.
The First Circular Stamps of Independent India
India Post issued seven stamps on 2 October 2018 to mark the start of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. They were the first circular stamps issued in independent India, and each shows one side of Gandhi’s life with one of his sayings in Hindi, signed “मो. क. गांधी”. Sankha Samanta designed the stamps and the miniature sheet, and the brochure text was written by Dr Amarpreet Duggal. India Security Press, Nashik printed 8 lakh of each stamp and 2 lakh miniature sheets.
The values are ₹5, ₹12, ₹20, ₹22, two of ₹25 and ₹41, which add up to the ₹150 of the miniature sheet.
