Launched in 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyaan (PMSMA) reflects India’s commitment to ensuring that every pregnant woman receives quality antenatal care and timely specialist support during pregnancy.
The programme is observed on the 9th day of every month as a dedicated initiative to provide comprehensive antenatal services, facilitate the early identification and management of high-risk pregnancies, and strengthen the journey toward safe motherhood. Over the past decade, PMSMA has evolved into a nationwide movement, bringing quality antenatal care closer to women and reinforcing the continuum of care for mothers and newborns across the country.
The commemorative postage stamp symbolizes care, protection, and hope. The number “9” featured in the design represents both the fixed day of service delivery under PMSMA and the nine months of pregnancy, reflecting the programme’s commitment to supporting women throughout their maternal journey. The stamp pays tribute to the resilience of mothers and the dedication of doctors, nurses, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), and healthcare workers who work tirelessly to safeguard two lives at a time.
The Department of Posts proudly issues this commemorative postage stamp to mark the years of Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyaan. The stamp honours a decade of collective efforts toward safer motherhood and celebrates the continuing commitment to improving maternal and newborn health, ensuring every mother has a safer pregnancy and every child receives a healthier start in life.
