India–Singapore Joint Issue
India Post issued two stamps on 24 November 2015 with Singapore for fifty years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, showing their presidential residences: Rashtrapati Bhavan (₹25) and the Istana (₹5). Singapore issued its own stamps with the same designs.
Rashtrapati Bhavan, built between 1913 and 1929 as the Viceroy’s House, became Government House at independence and took its present name on 26 June 1950, when Dr Rajendra Prasad became the first President. An H-shaped building of four floors, with 227 columns, 37 fountains and 2.5 kilometres of corridors, it is among the largest residences of any head of state; its Mughal Gardens open to the public in February and March. The Istana, the official residence and office of the President of Singapore, was designed by Major J. F. A. McNair and built from 1867 on land bought from Charles Prinsep’s nutmeg plantation, largely by Indian convict labourers brought from Bencoolen in Sumatra. The stamps were designed by Alka Sharma; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 0.3 million of each.
