About this stamp

On the Stamp

A portrait of Rukmini Devi Arundale, on the ₹50 definitive stamp.

Rukmini Devi Arundale

India Post issued this ₹50 definitive stamp on 11 May 2009 on Rukmini Devi Arundale (1904–1986), theosophist, dancer and choreographer, the most important revivalist of Bharatanatyam, and an activist for animal welfare. She was the first woman in India to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha, and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamps themselves.
