About this stamp
Sant Ganinath
India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 23 September 2018 for Sant Ganinath, revered in Bihar as a saint and ruler. The account that follows is the tradition told in India Post’s brochure.
Mansaram and his wife, a childless couple of Mahanar in Vaishali district, devotees of Shiva, found a child glowing with divine light in the forest and raised him as their own; the villagers named him Ganinath. He studied at Vikramashila in Samvat 1024 and mastered the eight siddhis and nine nidhis. He taught four precepts: study the Vedas; follow truth and dharma; give up attachment, anger, greed, pride and laziness; and respect and protect women. He married Kshema, daughter of Raja Dhang, and they had five children.
Becoming king in Vikram Samvat 1060, he united the states won by his ancestors, and his army defeated the invaders; their leader, Lal Khan, became his disciple. Ganinath and Kshema took samadhi together at Palwaiya Dham in Hajipur, Vaishali, now a temple.
