Surya Namaskar
India Post issued twelve stamps on Surya Namaskar, the salutation to the sun, on 20 June 2016, the eve of the second International Day of Yoga: one for each of the twelve positions of the sequence, six at ₹5 and six at ₹25, in a ₹180 miniature sheet and a ₹360 sheetlet that holds them twice. Several poses come twice in the sequence, on the way down and on the way back up, so they appear at both values. The brochure explains that Surya Namaskar stretches and tones the joints, muscles and organs and balances the body’s solar energy, which flows through the Pingala nadi. The stamps were designed by Nenu Gupta from material from the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 0.3 million of each stamp, 0.1 million miniature sheets and 25,000 sheetlets.
