About this stamp

On the Stamp

Swami Vivekananda and Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission he founded, on a ₹5 stamp.

Swami Vivekananda

India Post issued four stamps on 12 January 2013 for the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902), one at ₹20 and three at ₹5, printed in sheets of their own and together in a ₹70 sheetlet. Born Narendranath Datta in Calcutta on 12 January 1863, he met Sri Ramakrishna at eighteen, became his chief disciple and took the vows of a sannyasi. After his master’s death he travelled across India as a wandering monk, and saw the hardship of its people under British rule.

At the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893 he introduced Vedanta and Yoga to the West, and he is credited with raising interfaith awareness and bringing Hinduism to the status of a world religion. India celebrates his birthday as National Youth Day.

India Post has no brochure for this issue online, so this text draws on Wikipedia.
