About this stamp
Twenty Years of TRAI
India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 5 May 2017 for the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the statutory body set up under the TRAI Act, 1997, to regulate telecommunications. The Act came into force on 25 January 1997, and on 9 January 2004 the government also made the Authority the regulator of broadcasting and cable services.
What TRAI Does
TRAI recommends when new service providers should come in and on what licence terms, and advises on competition, technology and the efficient management of spectrum. It sets the terms of interconnection between operators and how they share revenue, lays down standards for quality of service and surveys the services to protect consumers, and keeps a public register of interconnect agreements. For broadcasting and cable it can set the terms of addressable systems, limits on advertising time and norms for revising the rates of pay channels. Its mission is to protect consumers’ interests while nurturing the growth of telecommunications, broadcasting and cable.
The stamp was designed by Kamleshwar Singh; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 410,000.
