Tales from the Panchatantra

India Post issued eight ₹4 stamps on 17 October 2001, in four se-tenant pairs, each pair telling one tale from the Panchatantra: the monkey and the crocodile, the lion and the rabbit, the crows and the snake, and the tortoise and the geese. The Panchatantra is an ancient Indian collection of animal fables in Sanskrit verse and prose, set within a frame story; it has been attributed to Vishnu Sharma, and draws on far older oral traditions. Early versions of the tale of the tortoise and the birds are found in both India and Greece. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamps themselves.
