About this stamp
Nanda Devi National Park
This ₹12 stamp is one of two that India Post gave to the Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Parks in its set of five on natural World Heritage Sites, issued on 16 March 2020. It shows the wildlife of the Nanda Devi park: a bear in the foreground and two wild mountain goats behind it, beneath a snow-covered peak. The other stamp shows the flowers of the Valley of Flowers.
Nanda Devi National Park, set up in 1982 as the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, lies around the 7,816-metre peak of Nanda Devi in Uttarakhand. Together with the gentler Valley of Flowers it covers a transition zone between the Zanskar range and the Great Himalaya, and UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1988.
Plants and Animals
Some 312 plant species have been recorded in the park, 17 of them rare; fir, birch, rhododendron and juniper are the main trees and shrubs. The larger mammals include the Himalayan musk deer, mainland serow and Himalayan tahr, with goral just outside the park. Carnivores are represented by the snow leopard, the Himalayan black bear and perhaps also the brown bear.
Technical Details
The stamp was designed by Shri Brahm Prakash and printed by wet offset at the Security Printing Press, Hyderabad, 500,000 copies. It also appears on the ₹46 miniature sheet of the set.
