About this stamp

Sixty Years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 10 December 2008, sixty years to the day after the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris on 10 December 1948. Drafted by a UN committee chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, its 30 articles set out the basic rights and freedoms of every human being, “born free and equal in dignity and rights”, as a common standard for all peoples and nations. It was the first step towards the International Bill of Human Rights.

The stamp shows Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King, with the words “Dignity and justice for all of us”.

India Post has no brochure for this issue online, so this text draws on Wikipedia.
