India Post issued two stamps, ₹5 and ₹25, and a ₹30 miniature sheet on 3 December 2015 for the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), founded on 1 July 1916 to survey, explore and study the animal life of the subcontinent. It grew out of the museum of the Asiatic Society of Bengal (1814–1875) and the zoological section of the Indian Museum, Kolkata (1875–1916). India has only about 2.4 per cent of the world’s land but more than 7.5 per cent of its known animal species, some 92,000. From its headquarters in Kolkata and 16 regional stations, the ZSI keeps the National Zoological Collections, more than a million identified specimens from protozoa to mammals. The stamps were designed by Suresh Kumar; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 0.5 million of the ₹5, 0.25 million of the ₹25 and 0.1 million sheets.
