About this stamp

The Graceful and Agile Indian Sighthound

The Mudhol Hound is one of India’s most distinctive indigenous dog breeds, admired for its speed, agility, and exceptional hunting ability. Known for its elegant appearance and remarkable endurance, this breed has been an important companion for hunters and pastoral communities across parts of the Indian subcontinent.

Origin and Distribution

The Mudhol Hound is primarily found across Maharashtra and Karnataka, particularly around the region of Mudhol, from which the breed derives its name.

Historically, the breed was kept mainly by tribal communities and pastoral groups who valued its exceptional hunting skills. The rulers of Mudhol trained these dogs extensively for hunting, while the royal family of Kolhapur also patronized and promoted the breed.

Physical Characteristics

The Mudhol Hound is known for its slender, athletic build, which enables it to move swiftly and effortlessly over long distances.

Some key physical features include:

  • Head: Long and lean with well-chiseled jaws
  • Nose: Slightly protruding beyond the teeth
  • Body: Narrow, bony frame designed for speed and agility
  • Tail: Long and tapering toward the end
  • Movement: Light, smooth, and effortless with strong driving action

These dogs come in a variety of colors, although albino varieties are not found in the breed.

Temperament and Hunting Skills

The Mudhol Hound is known for its quiet, reserved, and dignified temperament. Despite its calm nature, it becomes extremely focused and determined when hunting.

Its key behavioural traits include:

  • Strong concentration during pursuit
  • Exceptional stamina and speed
  • Ability to hunt in both dry and marshy terrains
  • Independent yet loyal disposition

These qualities make the Mudhol Hound a highly effective sighthound, capable of tracking and chasing prey across varied landscapes.

Cultural Importance

For generations, the Mudhol Hound has played an important role in the lifestyle of rural communities in western and southern India. Its reliability as a hunting dog and its ability to adapt to difficult terrain have made it a valued breed in the region.

The breed’s association with royal patronage and traditional hunting practices further highlights its cultural and historical significance.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

To promote awareness of India’s indigenous canine heritage, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp featuring the Mudhol Hound as part of the Breeds of Dogs series. The stamp celebrates the elegance, endurance, and historical importance of this remarkable Indian dog breed.
