About this stamp

India’s Elegant and Swift Hunting Dog

The Rampur Hound is one of the most well-known indigenous dog breeds of India. Renowned for its speed, strength, and elegance, the Rampur Hound has long been admired as a skilled hunting companion. With its streamlined body and remarkable endurance, this breed reflects the rich canine heritage of the Indian subcontinent.

Origin and History

The Rampur Hound originated in Rampur, located in the historic region of Rohilkhand in Uttar Pradesh. Historically associated with royal hunting traditions, these dogs are even depicted in Mughal miniature paintings, highlighting their long-standing presence in Indian history.

The breed gained prominence as a powerful hunting dog capable of chasing fast-moving prey. Historical accounts suggest that the royal kennels of Jahangir once housed thousands of these hounds, emphasizing their importance during the Mughal period.

Physical Characteristics

The Rampur Hound is a medium-sized, muscular dog built for speed and endurance. Its body structure resembles that of a greyhound, allowing it to move swiftly and gracefully.

Key physical features include:

  • Head: Long and wide, flat between the ears
  • Eyes: Slightly oval, ranging from brown to dark amber
  • Jaws: Strong with a scissor bite
  • Tail: Long and tapering
  • Coat: Short, firm, and smooth

These dogs are commonly found in brindle or mouse-grey colors, and their long legs and streamlined back contribute to their impressive speed and agility.

Temperament and Abilities

The Rampur Hound is known for its strength, endurance, and hunting instinct. Originally bred for hunting, it possesses sharp senses and excellent stamina, making it highly effective in pursuit of prey.

Important behavioural traits include:

  • Strong and energetic
  • Highly alert and focused
  • Loyal to its owner
  • Capable of sustained speed over long distances

These qualities made the Rampur Hound an ideal hunting partner for royal families and noble households in northern India.

Cultural Significance

The Rampur Hound continues to hold cultural importance in its region of origin. Every year, a traditional fair held in Rampur showcases these dogs, and the best-performing hound is awarded the prestigious title “Rustum-e-Rampur.” This event celebrates the breed’s heritage and recognizes its exceptional qualities.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

To highlight India’s rich diversity of indigenous dog breeds, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp featuring the Rampur Hound as part of the Breeds of Dogs stamp series. The stamp celebrates this graceful and powerful hound, recognizing its historical importance and contribution to India’s canine heritage.
