About this stamp
Fifty Years of Indian Submarines
India Post issued a ₹5 stamp and a ₹15 sheetlet of three such stamps on 7 December 2017 on INS Kalvari, marking fifty years of the Indian Navy’s submarine arm. The first Kalvari, a submarine of Russian origin, was commissioned on 8 December 1967. Since then the arm has grown from the first Kalvari class to the Sindhughosh and Shishumar classes, of Russian and German origin.
The New Kalvari
The new INS Kalvari, the first of six submarines built by Mazagon Dock in Mumbai under Project 75 with technology transferred from France, is a modern conventional submarine of French design, built to dominate the waters off an adversary’s coast and to protect India’s own sea lanes. She carries tube-launched missiles, long-range torpedoes, an advanced sonar suite, radar and electronic surveillance, and a communication suite for network-centric warfare; her commissioning in 2017 reincarnated the first submarine of the Indian Navy.
The stamp and the sheetlet were designed by Kamleshwar Singh; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 632,600 stamps and 111,400 sheetlets.
