Early Life and Accession

Maharana Pratap was born on 9 May 1540 A.D. He succeeded to the throne of Mewar on 28 February 1572 A.D. after the death of his father.

Defender of Freedom

Maharana Pratap deeply valued liberty, honour, and self-respect. He chose to resist Emperor Akbar, who had already captured Chittor Fort and aimed to subdue Mewar.

Rather than submit, Maharana Pratap inspired his warriors and prepared to defend his kingdom in the finest traditions of Rajput courage and chivalry.

Battle of Haldighati

In the famous Battle of Haldighati, Maharana Pratap and his soldiers fought with exceptional bravery. Though heavily outnumbered, he fought valiantly and escaped capture.

After the battle, he continued his resistance against the Mughal Empire. Several Mughal attempts to crush him failed, causing great hardship to the invaders.

Legacy of Courage

Maharana Pratap became a symbol of fearless resistance, preferring a life of struggle over surrendering his ideals of freedom and dignity. He is remembered as one of India’s greatest warriors and as the embodiment of Rajput honour, courage, and patriotism.

Death and Commemoration

Maharana Pratap passed away on 19 January 1597 A.D.

The Department of Posts issued a special commemorative postage stamp to mark the conclusion of the 400th death anniversary of this great Rajput warrior.
